Poppies - Mohn

Yesterday I have been driving around a lot. End of school year and I had to take the children to farewell parties, school, sports events etc. Luckily I did think of taking my camera with me. On one of the trips when I was by myself I took the time to stop at the roadside and take pictures of the poppies there. It looked amazing in the sunlight and I couldn't stop shooting. (The first three pictures are from my garden). Here is a small selection for you to enjoy. Have a wonderful weekend.

Strawberry swing - Biskuitrolle

strawberry swing, ursprünglich hochgeladen von galerie morgenstern

Strawberry Swing

Recipe

6 egges beaten vigorously with 150 grams sugar until really really fluffy.
Carefully fold in the contents of 1 package vanilla pudding by Gala which is only available in Germany I am afraid and add as much flour as needed to make 100 grams. If you don't live in Germany just use 100 grams of flour and some vanilla flavouring.

Use a regular rectangular baking sheet and line it with baking paper (I am not sure if this is what you call it). Fill in the dough and bake at 180°C for exactly 15 minutes on the middle shelf in your oven. Not shorter and not longer than that.

When the 15 minutes are over take out the sheet and cover it with a linen towel. Turn the sheet over onto the towel and lift off the baking papper. Then roll the dough and the towel together and let it cool which will not take very long. After cooling fill with whipped cream (no sugar added) and fruit to your liking. Strawberries in this case but you can also use cherries, raspberries etc. Roll it up and springle with powdered sugar.

I hope these instructions are sufficient. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Now have fun and enjoy eating it.

Delicious Sunday - Kulinarischer Sonntag

Elderberryflower Sirup

can be used to make some liqueur or jelly. First of all let me tell you the recipe for the basic ingredient - the juice.

Recipe for Elderberryflower Juice

Dissolve 35 grams Ascorbic Acid (which you can buy as powder at a pharmacy) in 1 litre mineral water (carbonized). Place 15 Elderberry Flower Heads (the flowers really really open) into the water mixture and leave overnight (at least 12 to 15 hours but not longer, the juice will be too strong). Then drain through a clean linen towel and your juice is ready to be transformed into a wonderful liquer or jelly. If you want to preserve it as juice you will have to add some sugar to your liking, boil it and then fill it into bottles with tight-fitting lids. Will not keep for too long so will have to be drunk soon.

Recipe for Elderberryflower Liqueur
Heat the above elderberry juice with 700 grams sugar until the sugar has dissolved. Doesn't necessarily have to boil to do that. Then measure the amount of juice you've got and add the same amount of 32 to 38% white rum (or clear Korn) to the mixture. Please let it cool down for a bit before you mix in the alcohol. Fill it into nice bottles, close them tightly and let them rest for about 4 months at a cool and dark place. You can then add as much as you like to a glass of prosecco or champagne. Makes a nice aperetif.

Recipe for Elderberryflower Jelly

Again take the juice and add sugar with added jellying ingredient depending on the manufactures description. I use the one where you only need half the sugar so I have more of the elderberry flavour. You can also add 1 kg sugar to 750ml juice (if you don't like any manufactured jelly sugar) and boil it. Then just test about every 5 minutes whether the mixture does start to jellify. As soon as it does fill it into jars, close them and turn them upside down for 5 minutes to prevent the jelly from spoiling.

"12 of 12 June 2010"
June 2010.

Good morning, 5 o'clock and I have to get up to get my daughter out of bed for work.

Then coffee of course, Java with lots of hot milk.

The second cup of coffe I take with me into the garden to walk around and enjoy.

Sometimes I bring something inside from my garden like this rose today.

Next thing I had to drive one of my sons to his cicle ball tournement. The bikes are taken apart to transport them.

At the moment you see those flags stuck on cars everywhere you go. Soccer World Cup, what else.
Fußballweltmeisterschaft, was sonst.

Now I have to take another son with my husband to a river where they join in a canoe-tour for the day.

My son and his paddle.

Today I will make some elderberry jelly. At least I will soak them in mineral water over night. The recipe will be posted here tomorrow if you like.

For dinner we had some homemade pizza, favourite of all family members.
Als Abendessen gab es dann selbstgemachte Pizza. Lieblingsessen aller Familienmitglieder.

 Our basement window.
 Unser Kellerfenstern.
The last thing as long as I have some daylight is a walk in the garden again to check on my blackberries.

Cacti - Kakteen

I can't believe it's been that long that I haven't posted anything. But it has, sadly. Anyway in the meantime I had intended to travel to Milano and ended up in London due to the ash cloud and an airline strike. Then it was my birthday with lots of celebrating and so on. For the photos of my London trip please move over to Flickr where you will find them under "Italienische Reise".
Last weekend I went to a wonderful exhibition at the Old Botanical Garden in Göttingen. My children go there regularly for classes on various subjects. They always come back very happy, motivated and a lot wiser when it comes to plants from all over the world. My children had also informed me of this exhibition of cacti. They had seen some during one of the classes and wanted to have some to. So we went to this fair and I was amazed. I had no idea how big a variety of cacti there is. The boys bought some "living stones" and I did too. The exhibition is once a year on the first weekend in June. I would have liked to give you a link but they are renovating their website so please check some time later. To show you a small portion of the plants we saw there - here you go.

"Living stones" and don't you think too that they do look pretty stony? See if you can find out which ones are the stones and which ones aren't.

This is what the boys bought. We will see whether they will all survive.

And I couldn't resist those. Aren't they lovely? They are called "Gauklerblume". I would translate it as "Clown Flower" but have no idea whether this is correct.
